چکیده

Who knows when our ancestors first became aware of electricity and magnetism? I imagine a primitive cave person, wrapped up in mastodon fur, desperately trying to stay warm in the dead of winter, suddenly seeing a spark of static electricity. Maybe at the same time in our prehistory someone felt a small piece of iron jump out of their hand toward a lodestone. Certainly lightning must have been inspiring and frightening, as it still is. But only recently (meaning in the last four hundred years) have these phenomena been at all understood. Around 1600, William Gilbert wrote his infuential De Magnete, in which he argued that the earth was just one big magnet. In the mid-1700s, Benjamin Franklin showed that lightning was indeed electricity. Also in the 1700s Coulomb’s law was discovered, which states that the force F between two stationary charges is F = q1q2 r2 ,

Reflections on Maxwell’s Treatise

Over a period of about twenty years, Maxwell’s determination and unification of the equations of electricity and magnetism evolved from his first paper on the subject in 1855–56, “On Faraday’s Lines of Force,” to the publication of his Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism in 1873. Notwithstanding the many historical accounts and textbooks devoted to Maxwell’s work, I have not been able to find...

Interpretation of Modified Electromagnetic Theory and Maxwell's Equations on the basis of Charge Variation

Electromagnetic waves are the analytical solutions of Maxwell's equations that represent one of the most elegant and concise ways to state the fundamentals of electricity and magnetism. From them one can develop most of the working relationships in the electric and magnetic fields. Considering deeply the effect of charge variation in Maxwell’s equations for time varying electric and magnetic fi...

Stability of partitioned methods for magnetohydrodynamics flows at small magnetic Reynolds number

MHD flows are governed by the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the Maxwell equations. Broadly, MHD flows in astrophysics occur at large magnetic Reynolds numbers while those in terrestrial applications, such as liquid metals, occur at small magnetic Reynolds numbers, the case considered herein. The physical processes of fluid flows and electricity and magnetism are quite different and numer...

Knots in the Nursery : ( Cats ) Cradle Song of James Clerk Maxwell Daniel

A field of mathematics can acquire energy from a notable paper. I will wager that knot theory is the only field that was both propelled by a paper and heralded by a poem. The paper, “On knots,” was written by the Scottish mathematician and physicist Peter Guthrie Tait in 1877. The poem, (Cats) Cradle Song, was a witty response by James Clerk Maxwell, another Scottish mathematician as well as a ...

Leptonic Magnetic Monopole

While it certainly happened later than the observation of stars, the observation of electricity and magnetism began far in Antiquity, due to Greece and China. Some 600 years B.C., Thales noticed the faculty of amber to attract light bodies when rubbed with a cat skin. But the Greeks also knew about magnets, whose name is magnes in Greek. And thus, since amber is called elektron, they left us no...
